Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Ingredients:

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Preparing the Hamburger Steaks:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties.

Cooking the Hamburger Steaks:

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the hamburger patties to the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

Preparing the Onion Gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
  2. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to combine, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  3. Gradually pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy has thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serving:

  1. Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the onion gravy over the top.
  2. Allow the steaks to simmer in the gravy for a few minutes to heat through.
  3. Serve the hamburger steaks hot, garnished with chopped parsley if desired.
