Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy
Ingredients:
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
For the Onion Gravy:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Preparing the Hamburger Steaks:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties.
Cooking the Hamburger Steaks:
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the hamburger patties to the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
Preparing the Onion Gravy:
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to combine, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy has thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serving:
- Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the onion gravy over the top.
- Allow the steaks to simmer in the gravy for a few minutes to heat through.
- Serve the hamburger steaks hot, garnished with chopped parsley if desired.
