Gourmet Patty Melt with Secret Sauce
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cups thinly sliced onions (from 1 large onion)
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
- Garlic powder and kosher salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 8 slices of rye bread
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Approximately 8 ounces Swiss cheese, sliced
Preparation:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Caramelize sliced onions for 20-25 minutes, stirring regularly until deeply browned. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Meanwhile, heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the skillet.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and a pinch of pepper. Form the mixture into four equal-sized patties slightly larger than the bread slices.
- Cook patties in the heated skillet for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Assemble the patty melts: Remove excess grease from the skillet and melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan. Place four slices of rye bread in the pan, buttered side down. Top each slice with a burger patty, Swiss cheese, half of the caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Finish with the remaining slices of buttered bread, buttered side up.
- Cook the assembled melts for 2-4 minutes per side, gently pressing down with a spatula occasionally, until golden brown and cheese is melted.
- Once cooked, transfer the melts to a cutting board and slice diagonally. Enjoy your gourmet patty melts!
