Gourmet Patty Melt with Secret Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cups thinly sliced onions (from 1 large onion)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • Garlic powder and kosher salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 slices of rye bread
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Approximately 8 ounces Swiss cheese, sliced

Preparation:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Caramelize sliced onions for 20-25 minutes, stirring regularly until deeply browned. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  2. Meanwhile, heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the skillet.
  3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and a pinch of pepper. Form the mixture into four equal-sized patties slightly larger than the bread slices.
  4. Cook patties in the heated skillet for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  5. Assemble the patty melts: Remove excess grease from the skillet and melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan. Place four slices of rye bread in the pan, buttered side down. Top each slice with a burger patty, Swiss cheese, half of the caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Finish with the remaining slices of buttered bread, buttered side up.
  6. Cook the assembled melts for 2-4 minutes per side, gently pressing down with a spatula occasionally, until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  7. Once cooked, transfer the melts to a cutting board and slice diagonally. Enjoy your gourmet patty melts!
