Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground mild Italian sausage
  • 1 small finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped bell pepper (preferably orange)
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 minced clove garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon parsley
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 3/4 cup Italian bread crumbs
  • 2 slices white bread, crumbled
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 8 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese (reserve 3/4 cup for topping)
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup marinara sauce, plus an additional 1/2 to 3/4 cup for topping

Instructions:

  1. In a small skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat and sauté onions and bell peppers for 3-4 minutes; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Italian sausage, sautéed onions, bell peppers, and all remaining ingredients (except 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese for topping).
  3. Mix thoroughly using your hands until well combined.
  4. Mold the mixture into a baking dish of your choice; consider using an oval Portuguese stoneware.
  5. Spoon 1/2 to 3/4 cup of marinara sauce on top and spread it evenly.
  6. Bake in a preheated 400-degree oven for 50 minutes.
  7. Remove from the oven and top with the remaining mozzarella cheese; sprinkle a pinch of dry basil over the top.
  8. Return to the oven for an additional 10 minutes.
  9. Ensure the meatloaf is fully cooked; baking time may vary based on thickness (approximately 2″ thick in this case).
