Crispy Panko Mozzarella Sticks

Ingredients:

  • 8 mozzarella string cheese sticks, cut in half
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • Canola oil

Directions:

  1. Prepare Coating:
    • Mix eggs with milk in a shallow bowl.
    • In another shallow bowl or plate, combine panko breadcrumbs with basil, parsley, oregano, and garlic.
    • Place flour in a separate shallow bowl or plate.
  2. Coat Mozzarella Sticks:
    • Dip each mozzarella stick first in flour, then in the egg mixture, followed by the panko breadcrumb mixture, and back into the egg and breadcrumbs one more time.
    • Place the coated sticks on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper.
  3. Chill in Freezer:
    • Freeze the sticks uncovered for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Heat Oil:
    • Heat canola oil in a deep fryer or Dutch oven to 375 degrees.
  5. Fry to Perfection:
    • Fry the sticks a few at a time until they achieve a golden brown color, approximately 1 minute. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Serve these crispy delights with your choice of marinara or chipotle mayo.

Notes:

  • Use a high-temperature thermometer to maintain the oil as close to 375 degrees as possible.
  • If you prefer a healthier option, these can also be baked. Drizzle with butter or spray with nonstick baking spray and bake at 400 degrees for 6-7 minutes.
