Ingredients:

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Nutmeg for garnish

Preparation:

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F. Combine sweetened condensed milk and hot water in a spacious glass or metal bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, whip the eggs until they become light in color and achieve a fluffy texture. Pour a portion of the hot milk mixture into the eggs to temper them, ensuring a smooth integration. Stir in vanilla extract and salt to complete the custard base.
  3. Pour the custard mixture into individual ramekins, placing them on a baking pan with high sides. Alternatively, use a 2-quart baking dish.
  4. To create a water bath, place the baking pan in the oven and fill it with about half an inch of water. Bake for 1 hour or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. If using a larger baking dish, extend the baking time to 1 hour and 40 minutes.
  5. Allow the custard to cool for an hour. Sprinkle a touch of nutmeg over the top for a delightful garnish. Serve warm or refrigerate for a chilled treat.

Indulge in the simplicity and richness of this Amish Baked Custard – a timeless dessert that effortlessly captures the essence of homemade goodness. Enjoy!
