Beef in Onion Gravy Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds beef stew meat, trimmed and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 packet dry onion soup mix (approximately 1 ounce)
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) of condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for thickening)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Start by placing the stew meat into your slow cooker.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the onion soup mix, condensed cream of mushroom soup, flour, water, and Worcestershire sauce until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  3. Pour this flavorful mixture over the beef in the slow cooker, ensuring the meat is evenly coated.
  4. Add freshly ground black pepper to taste and give the mixture a final stir.
  5. Set your slow cooker to low and cook for about 8 hours, or set it to high and cook for 4-5 hours, until the meat is tender and the flavors are well blended.
  6. Before serving, gently stir the contents. Serve the beef and rich onion gravy over your preferred side dish.

Variations & Tips:

  • For dietary restrictions, substitute the cream of mushroom soup with a gluten-free or lower-sodium alternative.
  • If you don’t prefer mushrooms, you can use cream of celery or cream of chicken soup instead.
  • To accommodate picky eaters, puree the cooked onions from the gravy to retain the flavor while masking the texture.
  • Enhance the nutritional value by adding carrots and peas during the last hour of cooking.
  • For a variation, try this recipe with chicken thighs or pork tenderloin, adjusting the cooking times as necessary.
  • Leftovers make an excellent filling for a savory beef pot pie, providing another delicious meal option.
