Crusty Italian Bread Recipe
Ingredients (Yields 2 loaves):
- 1 1/3 cups warm water
- 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil
- 4 cups flour
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and brown sugar. Stir and allow it to sit until it starts to bubble and foam.
- Add olive oil and salt. Gradually incorporate the flour until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Utilize the dough hook for a few minutes.
- Cover the bowl and let the dough rise until doubled, approximately 30 minutes.
- Punch down the dough, divide it in half, and shape it into two loaves. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise until doubled.
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Beat together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon water. Brush the risen loaves with this mixture.
- Make a single, quick, long cut down the center of each loaf with a sharp knife.
- For the secret touch, place at least 1 cup of hot water in a shallow pan on the rack underneath the bread. The steam will create a perfect crust. Add more water during baking if needed.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the loaves turn golden brown and produce a hollow sound when tapped.
- Remove from the pan and let them cool on racks. Optionally, enhance the hot crust by rubbing butter over it. Enjoy your delightful Crusty Italian Bread!
