Classic American Goulash Recipe

Embrace the nostalgia of a bygone era with this Classic American Goulash recipe, a cherished dish from my childhood. Traditionally prepared on the stovetop and finished in the oven, it epitomizes comfort and flavor. While it goes by various names across the country, in Minnesota, it’s simply known as Goulash.

Diverging from the global perception of goulash, this rendition is a robust, beefy macaroni concoction enriched with vibrant tomatoes. Known alternately as Chop Suey or Slumgullion in different regions of the United States, it provides a delicious journey through varied culinary traditions.

Ideal for those mindful of their food budget, this goulash ingeniously stretches a pound of ground beef into multiple servings. Partnered with pasta and a meticulously seasoned tomato-based sauce, it has earned its place as a go-to option for many, balancing flavor, convenience, and affordability seamlessly.

With pantry-friendly ingredients, this recipe often becomes the spontaneous choice on days when elaborate cooking feels like a stretch. Its simplicity allows even a teenager to effortlessly prepare it for a weeknight dinner, ensuring a satisfying meal without the fuss.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 lb macaroni
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • Seasonings: garlic salt, pepper, chili powder, & hot sauce (to taste)
  • 2 (14.5 oz) cans whole stewed tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • Tomato juice as needed

Instructions:

  1. Cook the macaroni to al dente following package directions.
  2. Brown ground beef and diced onion together in an extra-large skillet or dutch oven.
  3. Drain and season the beef mixture to taste.
  4. In a large bowl, mash tomatoes and add them to the beef along with ketchup.
  5. Drain macaroni and incorporate it into the beef mixture, stirring thoroughly.
  6. Adjust seasoning as needed, and add tomato juice if a juicier consistency is desired.
  7. Optional: For leftovers, consider adding extra tomato juice, as the noodles tend to absorb it over time.

Savor the timeless goodness of this Classic American Goulash, where simplicity meets satisfaction in every flavorful bite.
