Homemade Krispy Kreme-Style Doughnuts
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 3 tsp boiling water
- 1 tsp dry yeast
- 8 oz flour (just under 2 cups, measured and weighed)
- 1 1/2 oz sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 oz butter, at room temperature
- 1 pinch salt
- Oil for frying
Glaze:
- 1/3 cup butter
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 4 tsp warm water
Instructions:
- In a measuring jug, mix milk and boiling water. Add a teaspoon of sugar and yeast. Gently stir and leave it in a warm place until the yeast activates.
- In a bowl, mix flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Cut the butter in with your hands or using a pastry blender until it resembles crumbs. Add eggs (and beat quickly) and the yeast mixture to the flour mixture, and mix until smooth (about 5 minutes).
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured counter and knead for 5 to 10 minutes until you feel a spring and small bubbles form beneath the surface. Place it back in the bowl, cover with a cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise for about an hour until it doubles in size.
- Once risen, place the dough on the counter and cut into four pieces. Shape each piece into a long rope (about an inch to an inch and a half wide). Cut strips about 2.5 cm long, lift the ball with your hands, and place it on a baking tray or wire rack to wait.
- Cover the holes with a cloth so they rise while the oil is heating to 375 degrees F.
- Place the buns in the oil and fry until golden brown on each side, for about 2 minutes. Fry a few at a time to avoid crowding.
- Drain on a paper towel or wire rack on a cloth before glazing. Make sure to glaze them while they’re warm for that delicious coating!
Enjoy!
